The Alienware gaming laptops are famous for their design and very high price. But the latest addition to the lineup, Alienware M17 gaming laptop is affordable that the previous models and is priced at $2060. The M17 shares its design features with Alienware Area-51 m9750.
The laptop sports a 17-inch display with a resolution of 1920x1200 pixels. The display looks amazing but it also adds to the weight of the laptop. The laptop weighs 9.4 pounds and the AC adapter adds 3 pounds more to the total weight. So, if you want to carry it around, think before you go for it. The M17 is not the heaviest gaming netbook. The Dell’s XPS M1730 weighs 10.4 pounds.
The large size also has its advantages. The laptop houses a full-size keyboard. The gaming and typing is a pleasure on its keyboard. Moreover, the keyboard offers unique features that are not offered by any other netbook. The keyboard is backlit and you can also change the colors- red, blue or green, or can turn off the lights completely. The mouse buttons are not as good as keyboard. The buttons are a bit loose and you can hear the noise when the buttons are pressed.
The M17 features a number of ports that give you the full value of your money. The M17 features a FireWire port, Gigabit Ethernet port, VGA-out, HDMI-port and four USB ports. One of the USB ports also works as eSATA port. Though, the M17 lacks a DVI-out port but can buy ca HDMI-to-DVI conversion cable. The M17 also features a TV tuner and optical out port.
The M17 is powered by the 2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 CPU and 3GB of DDR3 RAM. The M17 houses 160 GB hard drive which can be upgraded. In addition to that it also has a second hard drive bay which can expand the storage capacity up to 1TB. You can expect the laptop at this price to support the Blu-ray reader but the M17 supports a dual-layer DVD burner. The battery life of M17 is little disappointing as the battery runs for just 2 hours only.
I'm running an Alienware Area51 - M17, Intel QX9300, 8Gb RAM, 1TB Raid0, Dual HD3870, Vista x64 Ultimate for a few months now and I can say that I'm quite satisfied. I bought it while my personal things are being transfered from France back to Australia with my 2 "SuperPCs" running on i7 965 Extreme, RAID0 Seagate Cheetah 15K SASs and OCZ Vertex EX SSDs, 12Gb RAM, Dual HD4870x2, Dual ViewSonic 28" full HD monitors with FOCAL sound systems... Not quite a "tower" replacement for me, but nothing comes closer for less than 5000€, and gets my 3D work going. I use a couple LaCie 500Gb external eSATA/dualUSB drives.... Can even watch a BluRay movie (well, with a good Bose QC3 headset, tho the included Audio isn't too bad... It's only after buying it that I saw better... a build including an i7, but too late and for 2000€ more tho... Maybe next life, Hehehehe !!!
