Android-based Ophone handsets to be launched by China Mobile in May

android-based-ophoneTo stick into this competitive market of mobile phones and to dig a strong platform, the China Mobile is planning to introduce a smartphone similar to the iPhone, the Ophone. The Ophone is expected to be launched in the China market in the month of May with an intention to compete with the popular iPhone.

This iPhone competitor from the house of China Mobile is said to run on Android based Open Mobile System developed by China Mobile itself. Moreover, the chipset solution of Ophone is most likely to come from Taiwan based MediaTek, as told by a leading daily in China. The known specs featured in the Ophone include a five Megapixel camera with autofocus technology, flash, video recording and a dedicated camera button too in addition. The smartphone is said to be equipped with a confirmed microSD memory card slot for additional storage and Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity technology, a voice recorder and a 3.5mm headphone jack. But there are no specific specs available regarding the onboard memory that will be built into the Ophone handset. The primary input method of the cell phone will be a virtual keyboard in English and Chinese language. The Android based Ophone will be using the China Mobile’s TD SCDMA, which is considered to be the company’s typical 3G like standard.

However, as said in the reports that China Mobile will be outsourcing the initial production of its Ophone to well known brands like Lenovo and LG Electronics. The report further added that this Apple iPhone’s competitor is supposed to go on for sale in China in the month of June through the carrier Unicom. However, there is no information regarding the pricing has been announced yet.  There are voices and rumors saying that once released in the market, the Android based Ophone could beat the most popular iPhone.
