AMD has announced the launch of its 1st ever quad-core Atholon II processors. Designed specifically for the mainstream consumers, the AMD’s Athlon II X4 quad core processor comes with the price tag of just $100, and targets mainly the consumers who are keen to lay their hands on Windows 7 desktop.

Both the latest Athlon II quad-core processors are touted to get fitted into Socket AM3. It also boasts of providing support for DDR3 RAM at up to 1333MHz. Since the two chips come built-in with backward compatibility to AM2+sockets, so, they are also made very user-friendly with the existing AM2 Socket-enabled motherboards.

The latest Athlon II quad-core processors are also built-in with the 2.60GHz Athlon II X4 620 and 2.80GHz Athlon II X4 630. The Athlon II X4 620 can be availed at Newegg for with the price tag of up to $99, while the Athlon II X4 630 has been priced around $126. Despite the Athlon name, the chip also uses the very same basic design, which was used by the newer Phenom and Phenom II processors called the K10 micro architecture.

Specifically designed for mainstream desktops, the Athlon II X4 platforms also boast the 785G chipset with Radeon HD 4200 graphics.
