Canon’s new i-SENSYS LBP3100 is its latest personal, mono laser printer. Its size is similar to that of a small bread-maker. The printer is surprisingly small and looks excellent on the desk with its white and glossy finish. The top cover of the printer, when opened, acts as the output tray. Usually, in mono lasers, a build up of dust on the paper stack happens if the printer is left open. To counter this problem, Canon has integrated a folding cover that disappears inside the printer when you close it. Canon has also provided a single sheet, multipurpose feed just above the cover.
As far as the interface of the printer is concerned, a single ‘resume’ button and LED indicator form the only manual interface. A power button is housed at the front of the printer. As the features, the printer houses a single USB socket at its back. The USB plug is covered by a small hinged cover. Canon could have done better by providing this socket at the top of the printer. The printer is extremely easy to set up. Just lift the top cover and you are ready to install the combined drum and toner cartridge. This toner cartridge is the only consumable in i-SENSYS LBP3100. The retail cartridge used in this printer is capable of printing 1,500 pages, but the one that is shipped is capable of just 700 pages.
The printing costs with this printer are about an average for a sub-£100, mono laser printer. This printer produces an ISO page for around 2.4p. As far as print speeds are concerned, the printer boasts of a print speed of 16 pages per minute. The printer prints a 15 × 10cm photo print in about 15 seconds. This speed is surprisingly sharp for a printer of this entry-level grade. The print output in terms of quality is clear and sharp and the overall output from the printer is pretty impressive. The Canon i-SENSYS LBP3100 is available at a price of £73.
