Camera manufacturers around the world have invested millions of dollars over the last few years to create more powerful sensors. The competition is so fierce that every new digital camera that was released had a more powerful sensor than its predecessor. The disadvantage to this process is that with the increment in megapixels the photocells got smaller each time. Smaller photo cells would presumably capture less light therefore creating noise at high ISO settings.
Despite of this fact Canon has advertised their latest creating the PowerShot G11. This comes equipped with a 14.7 megapixel camera coupled with a 1/1.7 inch CCD sensor. According to Canon the more the megapixel better is the camera, or is it so? Users and critics have time and again revolted on this issue and Canon’s G11 made its changes to a 10 megapixel camera for better light sensitivity. By compromising on resolution is the G11 now a major competitor in its segment?
The answer is indisputably a big yes! For professional photographers the G11 stands above the rest. The 5x digital zoom from its image stabilized lens is a very striking feature. The physical appearance of the G11 is not that different from the G10 except for larger control buttons and textured grip. It is loaded with advanced features such as manual exposure control, a minimum aperture of f/8.0 and shutter speeds vary from 15 seconds to 1/4000th of a second.
The powerful DIGIC 4 processor integrated in the G11 guarantees exceptional performance. With start up and shut down times at .5 seconds and 2 seconds respectively the G11 is very fast. When it comes to video resolution it does not disappoint, at 30 fps with a resolution of 640 x 480 the G11 is authentic. One major detrimental factor is its lack of HD video recording. During recording videos the zoom lens cannot be used which is another dire factor.
Overall the G11 does not disappoint with its high resolution and robust build. Despite of reducing the resolution Canon has created a very worthwhile camera. The gamble perfectly paid off and the G11 is definitely one of the top three compact cameras in the market today.
