The Canon PowerShot SX110 IS comes across as a relatively compact mega zoom camera. It is very reasonable priced and has features for both casual and experienced users. The camera measures 4.4 inches wide by 2.8 inches high by 1.8 inches deep. It weighs 10.4 ounces and can fit comfortably into a jacket pocket. The weight of the camera is largely due to optically stabilized 10 × f2.8-4.3 36-360mm zoom lens. Though slightly smaller than the SX100 IS, the SX110 IS remains large enough to be held securely. The camera comes encased in plastic. While most AA-powered mega zooms use four batteries, the SX110 IS is powered by only two.
The screen of the SX110 IS is 3.5 inches and is 0.5-inch larger than that of SX100. Various button such as PictBridge, face detection, display and menu buttons, once below the LCD, have been shuffled a bit. The wheel surrounds a Function button and has top, bottom, left, and right pressure points for ISO sensitivity, focus (manual and macro), flash, and drive mode. The decent face detection mode lets the user scroll through found faces to select one.
The SX110 IS is complete with to a full complement of manual and semi manual exposure modes, flash and exposure compensation, and metering modes. A drawback is that the SX110 IS supports only 30fps VGA without optical zoom and only mono sound. The shot-to-shot times are slow at 2.1 seconds without flash and 5.1 seconds once the flash is enabled. Burst shooting runs at 1.3 frames per second. The LCD is not easy to view in bright sunlight. The shutter lag for high and low contrast scenes is 0.5 second and 0.7 second respectively.
The camera gives exceptional photo quality, even at higher ISOs. Noise starts to show at ISO 400, and at ISO 800 photos have a mottled look, but loss of detail is relatively minimal. There is a little bit of magenta and purple fringing, but it’s only noticeable in outdoor shots with extreme contrast. Overall, the camera provides excellent exposure and color. The Canon PowerShot SX110 IS is available in the price range $260 -- $290.
