Dell Inspiron M102Z Ultra Portable Laptop Review

By on August 31, 2011

Dell Inspiron M102Z is the new ultraportable performance laptop from dell. It brings the new fusion processor from AMD on board and the graphics are also decent but main strength is its portability. It is a much better option than an Intel atom netbook. This 11.6 inch laptop has quite some competition still to contend with.

Dell Inspiron M102Z Design And Display

The laptop is large for an 11.6 incher and hence comfortable to use. The chiclet keyboard has big keys although might be a bit stiff in the beginning. The touchpad is very responsive and supports multi-touch gestures. It is a little bit heavy at 1.55 kg and thicker at the bottom measuring 35mm. The colour options include peacock blue, fire red, piano black and lotus pink. Build quality is decent but a bit creaky. It does goes a bit heated up after long time usage. Its colours give the laptop its much needed freshness. The 11.6 inch screen is glossy and does reflect life from the surroundings. It has a high resolution count of 1366*768 pixels.

Dell Inspiron M102Z  Specifications And Performance

The Inspiron M102Z powered by the 1.6 GHz AMD Fusion E-350 APU which combines the power of processor and graphics in one and works much better than conventional CPU. This is added to 4 GB RAM and 320 GB hard disk. The $599 model is equipped with AMD C-50 processor and 2 GB RAM. The $759 model also has a TV tuner built in it. The graphics department is handled by the AMD Radeon 6310 GPU and it supports DirectX 11 too. The performance is much better than the older M101z while the graphics performance is on par with other machines using the fusion processor.

The Radeon GPU is much better than the Intel HD graphics machines. You can not only do your office work but play HD videos too.

There are 3 USB 2.0 ports, multi card reader, HDMI, Bluetooth, Ethernet and WiFi. A USB 3.0 high speed port is sorely missed. There is also a 1.3 mp webcam with integrated earphones. There is SRS premium surround sound audio and you can easily switch to your HDTV through the HDMI output.

Dell Inspiron M102Z  Battery

The Inspiron M102z really exceeds expectations in battery tests and its 6 cell battery lasts more than four and a half hours which is more than other fusion machines. There is also an optional 9 cell battery that can pump it further up by a few hours.

The M102z is a very good machine that combines fusion processor performance with good graphics. However the $599 price may seem a tad too much in comparison to other netbooks. Even the $799 model pales down in comparison to other larger machines at this price. You can easily get laptops with better processors at this kind of price but then they will also feel like a brick being carried. The major benefit of this laptop is its battery life and portability. Even the TV tuner may come in handy in the higher version. With competitors bringing out similar machines at lower price, they would do well to watch out and keep ahead of the pack.
