This week, Dell launched the updated version of its Latitude tablet edition, the Latitude XT2. Dell launched the device with an official announcement regarding the presence of a multitouch screen on the device. This is not the first convertible tablet product. In December 2007, Dell forayed into this area by launching its first Latitude XT, a tablet PC. However, the multitouch capabilities in that device were accessible by a downloadable driver from Dell’s support site. The new thing in the latest release, the XT2, is that it has this driver preloaded. Dell has partnered with a firm called N-trig, which is a famous multitouch hardware and software maker. Now comes the features part. Just by moving two fingers on the XT2’s LCD screen, you can perform a variety of tasks like rotating, panning, and pivoting most file types. The tablet can be turned off just by tapping it once.
As its reviews, the tablet seems to be mimicking the Apple iPhone 3G. Its screen uses an active digitizer. This makes sure that you can use a digitized pen to operate the tablet. This pen is shipped with the tablet. This pen makes writing, annotating, or sketching on the tablet better. This tablet boasts of a swivel 12-inch widescreen that lays flat against the keyboard. The swivel angle is an impressive 180 degrees. The tablet houses a full-size keyboard. If you set the tablet to laptop mode, it uses both a pointing stick and a touchpad.
The new tablet houses three USB ports, VGA-Out, and an Ethernet port. An SD card slot is also present on the tablet. Dell has also made provisions for a SmartCard slot and TPM 1.2 on the tablet. The tablet in terms of dimensions measures 11.7 by 8.6 by 1 inches. The absence of an internal optical drive makes the tablet this thin. The XT2 also has options for both spinning and solid-state hard drives. The connectivity options include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and WWAN (mobile broadband). The technology of this tablet is based on Intel’s Montevina platform. The tablet is powered by an Intel Core 2 Duo SU9300 or SU9400 processor with up to 8GB of memory. The price of the XT2 starts at more than $2,000.
