The Ecoquiet RM ONE 50 desktop PC is a low cost desktop PC launched by RM (formerly Research Machines) technologies. The desktop PC is priced at £548, and as the name suggests focuses on ‘green’ credentials such as low power and low noise. The number 50 in the model name suggests the power consumption of less than 50 watts. This desktop PC is made around a new Intel Mini-ITX motherboard, the D945GCLF. This new motherboard has been codenamed ‘Little Falls’. The motherboard features a 1.6GHz Atom 230 processor, accompanied by 512KB of Level 2 cache and a 533MHz front side bus. The Diamondville version of the Atom chip in the machine is primarily optimized for low cost. It has a Thermal Design Power (TPD) rating of 4W.

The computer is power packed with a supporting chipset in the form of Intel’s 945GC Express. This chipset includes features like GMA 950 graphics, Intel High Definition Audio and a PCI Express X1 bus interface. The down side of the motherboard is that it has only a single memory slot. The ecoquiet RM ONE 50 houses 1GB of DDR2 RAM that can be expanded to a maximum limit of 2GB. As far as connections to the machine are concerned, the computer houses two PS/2 ports, four USB 2.0 ports and three audio jacks. Also, there are serial and parallel connectors, VGA-out, and Ethernet ports.

As far as computer screen is concerned, the ecoquiet RM ONE 50 has a height and tilt adjustable 17 inches TFT monitor. This monitor is attached to the side of tower orientated system unit. The backplane connectors are not visible as they are hidden in an easy-access panel. The screen houses two USB ports in the front, a FireWire connector. Also on the front is a pair of audio jacks and button for volume control. The computer is available with an 80GB hard drive and lacks an optical drive. The padlock-and-bolt system of the computer secures the PC to a desk. Like many of the RM technologies products, the Ecoquiet RM ONE 50 too is specifically targeted at the education market and is an excellent initiative for the same.
