Fujitsu Siemens LifeBook S6420 reviews

Fujitsu offers a wide range of professional notebooks. The S6420 is latest entrant to Fujitsu Lifebook S series and is aimed at professionals who need decent performing notebook. The entry level model costs £1,010 (ex. VAT), while the top-end model comes in at £1,192 (ex. VAT).

The S6420 features a matte black lid with a bar of reflective material on top edge. The screen is also built on a black frame, and the keyboard section is light silver with white keys. The notebook comes in a zipped sleeve but it is not enough to safeguard the system from serious knocks or drops. So, you definitely need a travel bag. The lid and keyboard sections are held together by a clasp.

The S6420 is 31.4cm wide, 23.4cm deep and it thickness varies between 2.24-3.35cm, and it weighs just 1.7kg. The S6420 sports a bright 13.3-inch LED-backlit display. The reflective coating of the screen makes it difficult to work in outdoors or in bright areas, but the display looks bright and clear in adequate lighting conditions. The display offers a native resolution of 1280×800 pixels which is on the lower side. But the graphic system can support 1920×1200 on external monitor.

The spill proof keyboard of S6420 features a full height number row with smaller function keys on the top. The keys are large and offer plenty of return, so the touch typists should not have any problems. The touchpad is located just below the keyboard with a fingerprint reader located between the mouse buttons. But the touchpad lacks the scrolling capabilities.

A row of keys above the keyboard features shortcuts for locking the notebook and ECO mode, which switches off some features to save the power, and application shortcuts.

The Fujitsu LifeBook S6420 is powered by 2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T9400, T9600, P8600 and P8400 and 2GB of RAM. The notebook comes with installed Windows Vista Business and comes with Windows XP CD if you wish to downgrade. The graphics are controlled by Intel GMA 4500MHD which is integrated on GM45 Express chipset. There are various hard drive options available with the S6420: 64GB solid-state drive, mechanical hard disks at 120GB, 160GB, and 320GB. The right edge of the system features modular bay which features a multi-format DVD rewriter and can also accommodate second battery or weight saver. The S6420 also sports integrated 3G/HSDPA with download speeds up to 7.2Mbps; the SIM slot is located beneath the battery. A standard V.92 modem is present too. A fixed position webcam sits just above the screen.

The notebook features plenty of ports and connectors which include microphone and headphone jacks, an S-Video port, a FireWire (IEEE 1394) port, mechanical switch for the Wi-Fi, three USB 2.0 ports, modem (RJ-11) port, Card slot, a flash memory card slot with support for SD- and Memory Stick-compatible media, infrared port, Ethernet (RJ-45) port, and a VGA-out port.
