The FX P-7805u is another budget minded 17-inch laptop from Gateway. Priced at $1,299, the Gateway boasts of the Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 CPU and Nvidia GeForce 9800 graphics card but the Gateway has taken a step backwards by reducing the 17-inch display’s resolution to 1,440×900. Though the laptop is perfect for playing low resolution games but it is disappointing for watching HD video.
Measuring 15.8 inches wide, 11.8 inches deep, 1.3-1.7 inches high, the FX P-7805u weighs 9.1 pounds alone and 10.5 pounds with AC adapter. The laptop is powered by 2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 CPU and 4GB of 1066MHz DDR2 RAM. You can store up to 320GB on its hard drive which spins at 7,200rpm. The graphics are handled by Nvidia GeForce 9800M GTS graphics card which is integrated on Mobile Intel PM45 Express Chipset. The laptop comes with pre-installed Windows Vista Premium (64-bit) operating system.
The FX P-7805u looks quite similar to Gateway’s previous 17-inch laptop model, P-7811FX. The laptop is built with glossy, black, plastic chassis, with brushed-metal detailing and copper accents around the keyboard. In addition to the full-size keyboard, the laptop boasts of a spacious and comfortable separate number pad. A row of media controls is provided on the top of keyboard along with the touch-sensitive volume slider control.
With its P-7811 model, the Gateway boosted the resolution to incredible 1920×1200 pixels while keeping the price down. However, it is quite disappointing to see P-7805u’s resolution to slip back to 1440×900. But the laptop offers all the ports and connector that are offered by most laptops in its category. These include VGA-out, HDMI- out port, Stereo speakers, headphone/microphone jacks, three USB 2.0, mini FireWire, SD card reader, eSATA, ExpressCard/54, Modem, Ethernet, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi and DVD burner. Along with its comprehensive collection of ports, the laptop provides incredible battery backup of 3 hours on video playback. This battery life is pretty impressive considering the fact that it is a laptop replacement.
