Decided against Gateway after all the issues I've read...also I saw that Gateway has on of the higher hardware failure rates...approaching 20+% during the first three or four years of use. I purchased a Sony VGN-nw228F $449 at NewEgg on Black Friday...a great computer for the money and no problems.

I just recieved this computer for christmas and I have to say that for the money it has the best specs out there. I have encountered the upper left side overheat shutdown once and was disappointed but I purchased a $10. bottom fan cooling pad and it hasn't happened since. I believe if you can't afford more than 500.00 dollars for a computer then this is your best bet.

I purchased the NV5214u on 18 Dec and almost immediately started having the "blank screen" issue. I did a lot of searching and finally found a FAQ at gateway - http://support.gateway.com/s/notebook/2009/gateway/nv/nv52/NV52faq7.shtml . After updating the WAN driver I haven't had a blank screen. After the update, this is now an awesome $400 computer!

Sorry in my post above, the gaming laptop I purchased for my son was a Gateway(FX series I believe)...really cool design , high end parts and hundreds less than the competition. Poor construction , keyboard was very flexible, and flimsy on all three computers that I had exchanged for ... all failed in the first 10 days. The guys that worked at Best Buy said they all had this laptop and never had a problem(yeah right) and they were very surprised.

I'm very sad to hear off all the problems...I purchase a different laptop for my son...phenominal gaming specs...it crashed, we went through three exchanges and I finally told Best Buy I want my money back, they said sorry we're going to give you a store credit, I protested and told them I would throw a fit in the store if I didn't get my money back...I had to she the manager that the same computer on display in the store crashed and froze...pretty pitiful. Gateway really hit a home run on this computer, but with all these problems it's not worth the hassle. Buy an Asus(6% failure) or Toshiba(i believe 10%+/-), they have the lowest failure rates in the business for laptops.

I have been going round and round with gateway about the problem with this laptop overheating and they wont do anything, not even register the computer, because the date of purchase in their records and the date on my receipt from Best Buy are different. Because of this, they wont do anything for me at all, and they are rude and disrespectful, my advice, dont buy another gateway..... ever!!

I purchased this computer in June. In September, the display screen went completely white. I sent it back to Gateway for repair, I paid for the shipping. I called to check the status every week to be told the part isn't in stock. After a month of waiting, I finally get a call from Gateway informing me that the part is on backorder and they would like to offer me a replacement computer equivalent to the one I purchased. I accept the replacement and received it on Tuesday, November 3. Would you believe the replacement didn't work either? Wouldn't even boot to Windows 7. So, I was offered, yet again, another replacement. I'm not paying to ship the replacement back so I have to be inconvenienced, again, and wait to receive a shipping label in the mail. Then I have to ship it back and when the replacement is received, then I will receive the second replacement. I've never been so disappointed in a product. Be smart don't buy this machine.

I just bought one of the NV series and I also have the overheating problem that locks the system up as well, i wonder if one of those laptop cooling systems that the laptop would sit on would help.

I got this model and my screen goes blank all the time. I have to turn it off and reboot it everytime this happens. I exchanged it at Best Buy and the new one does the same thing. I even elevated it on a stand and it still happens. I think the design is prone to over heating!

Hi i recently bought this laptop, and on the opposite thing that the power button is on the left side where the lock thing is at the thing came loose and like wobbles and moves around allot. There isnt any screw that actually tightens it but it gets really annoying, and i havnt dropped it or caused any damage like that for it to do this, so any ideas why its doing this?
