The $800, UC7807u is a mainstream laptop from Gateway which is launched by the company to keep up with its parent company, Acer. The Gateway has concentrated on providing attractive design to the laptop. The main design features include brushed aluminum interior, barreled hinge, and the lacquered top are all noteworthy. But the laptop is among the heaviest 13-inch laptop at the moment.
Though the laptop is designed quite thoughtfully but the overall design of the laptop is far from perfection. Measuring 12.7×9.7×1.5 inches, the Gateway is much thicker than the Apple’s MacBook which is just 0.8 inches thick and the Lenovo IdeaPad U330 which is just 1.1 inches thick. The excessive thickness of the laptop has added a lot to its weight as the Gateway UC7807u weighs 5.3 pounds which is quite heavier than MacBook and Ideapad as they weigh 4.5 and 4.2 pounds, respectively. There are some 14-inch laptops which weighs almost same as the Gateway UC7807u.
Unlike other Gateway laptops, the UC7807u houses a full-size keyboard which provides comfortable typing experience. Another interesting feature is the circular touchpad which is a welcome departure from the usual rectangular ones though the navigation experience is similar to the rectangular ones. The mouse buttons are tad resistant and the touchpad is located on the right side which takes a little time to get used to.
Though the laptop is inexpensive as compared Apple, Lenovo, Sony and Toshiba laptop, it offers HDMI-out port and slot loading DVD burner. The Toshiba M305-S4835 and Sony CS190 are expensive when compared to Gateway but they lack HDMI out port. Moreover, the UC7807u provides three USB ports which are located side by side instead of located on the top of one another. Other important ports and connectors include VGA-out port, an Ethernet port, a 4-in-1 card reader, and built-in webcam.
Being an inexpensive system, the UC7807u lags behind the Lenovo and MacBook when it comes to the performance. The laptop is powered by a budget processor- 2-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 which is good for general-purpose tasks but not at all suited to hard-core users. The laptop is provided with 3GB of memory and its integrated graphics can handle the 2D games.
