The Goodyear has launched four entry-level models, of which the $200 GY145 is at the middle of the pack and boasts of a large 4.3-inch screen along with Navteq maps of the 48 states, and 3 million POI database. However, you can pay additional $50 for maps of Canada, Alaska, and Hawaii. Other two models- the GY135 ($149.99) and the GY135C ($179.99), sport 3.5-inch screen and come with different maps. These two models sport the same screen which you will find on entry-level Garmin nüvi 265T. The nüvi 265T boasts of maps of U.S. and Canada, live traffic updates, and six million POI database.
Measuring 3.2 inches high, 5 inches wide, 0.8 inches deep, the GY145 weighs 6.9 ounces, which is more or less standard for 4.3-inch screen GPS. The device comes with a USB cable for updating maps along with a DC adapter, a stylus, and a simple ball-and-socket mounting bracket. However, you don’t get dashboard mounting.
The user interface is pretty good and the main menu screen features large icons. At the bottom of the screen, you will find row smaller icons, which include icons for map view, GPS status, device setup, and navigation settings. The device allows you select route for travel by foot, car, or bicycle. You can also customize the route by choosing from number of options such as, time, distance, vehicle type, and economy, or by avoiding ferries or tolls. The customization options don’t end there. You can view 2D as well as 3D map, auto zoom, QWERTY or alphabetical keyboard, and can choose from English, Spanish, or French.
With the GY145, the destination entering is very simple. The device shows the previously entered street, city and state, and you can change the address by clicking on any of the three elements. Moreover, the GY145 provides predictive text entry as soon as you enter letters. However, the GY145 makes the destination entry even simpler by providing tabs across the top of the keyboard, as the possible choices for cities. The GY145 also supports text-to-speech conversion.
