Honeywell has confirmed in specifications sheets on its website, the plans it has to ship LCD TVs at sizes up to 82 inches on the diagonal. The LCD TVs will actually be manufactured by Soyo. The company Soyo is a Taiwan manufacturer that originally designed PC motherboards. It later moved on to the business of server and white-box space. The company has put up a downloadable PDF that lists the specifications of the MT-HWGWT8218AM, the mighty LCD that boasts of a gross weight of 369 pounds. Honeywell, however, has not released key features of the device, like price and shipping date. The company has said that the LCD will have mightier dynamic contrast rations. The 600 cd/m2 brightness of the LCD will most likely cover an entire room with light. The display will have a native resolution of 1920×1080 pixels, a resolution not up to the standards of such a big LCD.
It must be noted that in the past, Westinghouse offered a 32-inch and 42-inch LCDs at $499.99 and $799.99 respectively and were able to sell out their products at lightening speeds. Honeywell aims to mimic Westinghouse in this respect.
Robert Heron, a noted HDTV guru, was quoted as saying on this announcement “The Honeywell announcement is great and pleasing news. Any HDTV manufacturing company that brings forth an extremely bright picture (500-600cd/m2) is not aiming to make TVs to have to compete with the Samsung’s of the world (or Vizio’s latest for that matter) – this strikes me as repurposed ‘digital signage. Any LCD manufacturer can produce a super-bright picture; the more critical question is how dark is the TV’s depiction of video black. Also, the specs for Honeywell’s LE-series seem to indicate that the various screen sizes weight about 2 or 3 times more compared to similar sizes from other manufacturers – another indication of repurposed signage.”
