HP Pavilion dv series of laptops are aimed at providing the best multimedia experience to its users with great combination of videos, music and other forms of media. The dv line of laptops comes in 14-, 15-, and 17-inch versions. All these laptops share some common features which include Altec Lansing speakers, HDMI outputs, and touch-sensitive media control buttons. However, the HP has made few trade-offs with its $649 HP Pavilion dv5-1235dx. However, you can get similar-looking 17-inch HP Pavilion dv7-1245dx, which is equipped with same 320GB hard drive and 4GB of RAM. Though the dv7-1245dx is priced $50 higher but it is powered by slower AMD CPU. So, it depends on you whether to go for screen real estate or processing power.
Measuring 14.1 inches wide by 10.5 inches deep by 1.15 – 2.5 inches high, the laptop weighs 6.5 pounds (the AC adapter adds another 0.9 pound). The dv5-1235dx is powered by 2.9GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 CPU and 4GB, 667MHz DDR2 RAM. The graphics are handled by Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics card which is integrated on Mobile Intel GM45 Express Chipset. The laptop comes with pre-installed Windows Vista Premium operating system and provides storage space of 320GB on its hard drive which spins at 5,400rpm.
Though the dv5-1235dx is a budget system but it is good to see array of lighted, touch-sensitive media controls above the keyboard, which is are backlit in either white or orange. It also features a volume slider. If the system is asleep or off, the touch sensitive controls vanish into the mirrored strip above the keyboard.
The dv5-1235dx boasts of 15.4-inch wide-screen LCD screen which has native resolution of 1280×800 pixels, which is typical to 15-inch screen. The display has glossy finish which makes video content look good but on the other hand it can cause distracting glare from ambient lights.
When it comes to ports and connectors, the laptop offers some notable extras considering the fact that it is a aub-$700 laptop. These include two headphone jacks, a combo USB/eSATA port, and a Lightscribe DVD burner. Other standard ports and connectors on the laptop include VGA-out, HDMI-out port, Stereo speakers, microphone jacks, 4 USB 2.0 (1 USB/eSATA), SD card reader, ExpressCard/54 and Ethernet, 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi.
The dv5-1235dx simply fascinates you with its battery life of 5 hours, which makes it one of the best mainstream performers but the battery is quite large and sticks out from the bottom of the system.
