The new HP TouchSmart tx2-1275dx is a revamped version of HP’s tablet PC that was launched earlier this year, the HP TouchSmart tx2z. The tx2z has base price of $999 and it offers a number of add-ons, which increase its price as you upped the specifications. However, the new TouchSmart tx2-1275 is priced at $849 and it doesn’t offer any add-ons.
The most attractive feature of the TouchSmart tx2-1275dx is the rotating touch sensitive screen that supports multitouch gestures. The support of multitouch gestures makes it an enjoyable gadget. However, the support for multitouch gestures comes at the expense of functionality. The HP TouchSmart tx2-1275dx cannot compete with similarly priced laptops that are powered by Intel Core 2 Duo processors. Moreover, it has a very poor battery life, with just two and hours of backup on video playback. Even though the TouchSmart tx2-1275dx sports an excellent design, it is quite bulky as compared to other 12-inch ultraportable laptops.
Measuring 12.1 inches wide, 8.8 inches deep, 1.5 inches high, the HP TouchSmart weighs 4.8 pounds (the AC adapter adds another 0.8 pound). The TouchSmart is powered by 2.2GHz AMD Turion X2 Dual-Core RM-74 CPU and comes equipped with 4GB of 800MHz DDR2 SDRAM. The graphics are handled by ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3200 graphics card, which is integrated in AMD RS870 chipset. The tablet PC provides storage space of 320GB on its hard drive, which spins at 7,200 rpm, and comes with preinstalled Windows Vista Home Premium (64-bit) operating system.
The HP TouchSmart sports a 12.1-inch wide-screen LCD, which has native resolution of 1280×800 pixels, which is same as what you find on other 12-inch displays. The display differs from the display of other laptops as you can use both the digital pen and finger different applications. Due to the rotating hinge, you can use the screen in three different positions: on the top of keyboard as tablet PC, conventional laptop, and facing away from the keyboard. You can rotate the screen with the help of a rotate key, which is located in the screen bezel, along with fingerprint reader and Webcam.
The ports and connectors featured on this tablet PC include VGA-out port, stereo speakers, headphone/microphone jacks, 3 USB 2.0, SD card reader, ExpressCard/34, Modem, Ethernet, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and DVD burner. However, it lacks mini-HDMI or mini-DVI port, and mini-FireWire port that you will find on other laptops.
