HTC offers handsets with unique styling which cater to individual needs and HTC continue to do so with the S743, which provides combination of Touch Diamond and the Touch Pro. Measuring 4.5 inches tall by 1.7 inches wide and 0.6 inch deep and weighing 4.9 ounces, the S743 has smaller profile than Touch Pro but it still manages to squeeze in a full QWERTY keyboard.
The handset boasts of 2.4-inch QVGA display, which offers 240×320-pixel resolution and supports 65,000 colors. As the handset is not equipped with touch-screen, so you won’t get HTC’s Touch Flo interface. Instead, this handset offers traditional Windows Mobile user interface. The navigation array below the display consists of a four-way toggle with a center select button along with two soft keys, Talk and End buttons, a Home shortcut, and a back button. The alphanumeric keys are pretty large in size and are perfect for typing simple text messages. In order to type longer e-mails, you get incredible four-row QWERTY keyboard, which can be accessed by pushing the face of the phone to the right.
The left spine of the handset houses a volume rocker whereas a camera activation/capture button is located on the right spine. The top edge of the device houses the power button whereas Mini-USB port/headset jack is located on the bottom of the handset. It is quite disappointing to see that the handset doesn’t have 3.5mm standard headphone jack. So, you will have to use audio adapter if you want to use your own headphones. The microSD card slot is located below the SIM card slot, so you will have to remove the SIM everytime while swapping the memory card.
The S743 is a quad-band handset, which means you can use it anywhere in the world. Other features include speakerphone, voice dialing and commands, speed dial, and text and multimedia messaging. The handset also supports mono and stereo Bluetooth headsets along with integrated GPS. The S743 also supports 3.5G bands, which means it also supports HSDPA from AT&T SIM but not T-Mobile as both carriers operate on different bands. You also get integrated Wi-Fi (802.11b/g).
The S743 is a Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard Edition, which offers all the typical features of a Windows Mobile handset. These include Internet Explorer Mobile, Microsoft Office Mobile Suite, Microsoft’s Direct Push, and Windows Media Player.
The HTC S743 sports a 3.2-megapixel camera which captures still as well as videos. The camera features include various picture qualities, resolutions and adjustable white balance and brightness. You can use 123MB of user-accessible storage, which can be expanded up to 16GB.
The HTC S743 has a rated talk time of 5.8 hours (GSM)/5 hours (3G) and up to 10 days of standby time.
