HTC Sensation XE Review

By on April 12, 2012

After the HTC Sensation XL, the Sensation XE will be Beats Audio’s second smartphone in the company’s range. The Sensation XE is more powerful than the XL as it has a 1.5GHz dual-core processor compared to a single-core one on the XL.

As it is branded as a Beats device, it comes in a stylish red and black color scheme and also has a pair of earphones, made by Beats, as part of the package.

Music Performance

The Monster iBeats  earphones can be ordered on www.currys.co.uk for £64. They come with an in-built microphone and a remote control built inline, and though they produce good sound, much better than the one you get through the ones you get with the device, yet they aren’t that brilliant. When you insert the Beats earphones, the music player presents you the option of switching on or off the Beats Audio.

With it turned on, the music has bass and treble at the maximum. While this works quite well for most numbers, it makes the mid-range almost non-existent and it gets tiring after some time. We liked the soothing sound made by the device with the Beats turned off.

Plugging in a different variety of earphones gave us a choice of using the HTC enhancer or the Beats Audio. The sound output of the Beats Audio was as good as it was before, but the inbuilt enhancer had more bass than needed, which totally dominated the remaining sound. The best sound from both earphones could be had  when Winamp (Amdroid) was used, which made the music sound less processed.

Battery Life

As a smartphone, the HTC Sensation XE is better than the music player. The super-fast dual-core processor helps the phone accomplish functions at speed. The battery life is over seven hours long which is reasonable in its own terms but it can’t hold a candle to the 12-hour battery life of the iPhone 4S.

The screen has a resolution of 540×960 (qHD), which is impressive and this makes the images and text sharp with lot of contrast. The screen is so bright that even with the brightness set at the middle level, it was quite adequate for general use.

Operating System

The software on the HTC Sensation XE smartphone is Android 2.3 operating system and user-interface is HTC 3.0 Sense.

There are lot useful features which Sense adds to the phone and if you access lot of social networking sites, you can use Sense to add friends from Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook. Sometimes it gets overwhelming fitting large widgets on the many home screens. There lot of apps which are bundled with the Sense and though some are useful, the ones which aren’t, and you are not using them, cant be uninstalled.

Internal Memory

The HTC Sensation XE comes with 1GB of internal memory space and it can be expanded by using a microSD card. This arrangement will never leave you wanting for more storage space.

The camera takes nice pictures having real vibrant colors, but indoor pictures clicked under fluorescent lights are noisier than usual. The HTC Sensation XE can shoot videos at 1080p. There is a light to shoot videos in low-light conditions, but this feature is switched off automatically when the battery is low on juice.

Sum Up & Price

The HTC Sensation XE is fast and has a high resolution screen available at a fairly good price given its high performance. The Beat earphones, though not the best out there, make a better sound than the ones which are shipped with most smartphones and they don’t add any extra cost to the price of the handset.

The XE’s operating system will soon get upgraded to the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich this year and you don’t need to worry about getting left behind.

The HTC Sensation XE smartphone is a good buy if you like the Beats earphones it comes with more than the better looking Motorola RAZR or the superb Samsung Galaxy S2 with its excellent OLED screen. The HTC Sensation XE is available for £375.
