Imation India has rolled out the world’s first multi terabyte magnetic tape, which makes use of sophisticated metal particulate media. The next-generation multi-capacity tape also uses company’s proprietary TeraAngstrom technology.
The LTO-5 tapes boast of offering 3.2 TB of compressed storage. They can also transfer data at 360MB/sec speed. With enhanced and improved servo technology, these taps are able to provide the similar length of tape to store more information.
Subodh Kulkarni, V.P. of Imation’s Research, Development, and Engineering, said that Metal particulate media is the most appreciating standard in data storage, and with MP-enabled LTO-5, the capacity of the cartridges is doubled. Imation is powering its very old tradition in secure, reliable and long-lasting data storage products and has expertise in the metal particulate media to make sure that this X-gen of LTO media beats standards for data safety and provides lots of data in a single, multi-terabyte data cartridge. It is a very delightful moment for us to have acquired the license for the manufacture of LTO-5.
Thanks to the TeraAngstrom technology, Imation has been capable of creating magnetic media with a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and a considerably smoother surface. This claims to offer decreased errors and more than enough transfer rates.
Sandeep Popli, head of Sales & Marketing, in Imation India Pvt. Ltd., was quoted to have said that LTO-5 tape technology will provide a cost-saving mode for Indian businesses in the enterprise IT space to store constantly growing data, whether for regular supporting of active data or long-standing archival, provided tape’s energy-efficiencies and a price for each gigabyte benefits over other methods.
The licensed companies have plans to roll out the LTO-5 tape cartridges at the very start of 2010. These cartilages are expected to come with enhanced encryption capabilities for efficient backup, archival and restore of critical data also.
There is no word from the company as to the pricing of the device, but it is expected very soon.
