Intel’s X-25M solid-state hard drive is an excellent development in the solid-state drive category. This drive offers faster access and boot times and improves notebook battery life. This drive is available at a high price of $700 per unit and this gives it the highest cost per gigabyte. A special feature of these drives is that instead of storing data on traditional hard disks, they use large blocks of flash-based NAND memory. This means that these devices can never malfunction as they have no physical platter to spin like traditional hard drives have. These SSDs are faster at accessing data and use less power. They also generate minimal heat thereby improving the battery life of notebooks.
The Intel X-25M solid-state drive is available only as an 80GB-capacity drive. It comes in two sizes of 2.5 inches and 1.8 inches for use with a variety of desktops and notebooks. Due to the nature of flash memory technology, solid-state hard drives brag of a relatively well-defined time before failure. This device has an estimated 100,000 read/write cycles before its memory starts wearing out. When you use this device with a notebook, it runs for almost 20-30 minutes longer than the conventional drives making it a true battery saver. So, the claim that Intel boasts of about the drive is true. It is faster than any of its competitors, and will keep your notebook running longer, than either a traditional hard drive or any other solid-state drive. It is compatible with the Windows Vista Ultimate operating system.
Due to its fast speed and excellent power saving performance, it is best suited for travelers, digital media creators, and gamers. In general, it is best suited for anyone for whom performance and/or battery life are the most important factors in buying or building a computer. However, the memory capacity of 80 GB might prove to be insufficient for many users.
