The 10-megapixel Kodak EasyShare Z1085 IS is a nice camera which is priced below $200. Though the camera does not offer stylish design or special features but it offers lot more in terms of image quality.
Weighing 7.3-ounces, the Z1085 is a compact camera which measures 3.5 inches wide, 2.5 inches high and 1.5 inches thick. Though the camera will fit large pockets but is quite comfortable when shooting with one hand. The controls are big and adequately spaced so that you don’t hit wrong buttons accidentally. The top edge of the camera houses controls for drive mode, flash, and power and shutter release which is circumscribed by a mode dial. The dial can be used for choosing scene mode from the 16 modes or capturing the videos. The Kodak’s Smart Capture mode is a really good feature when you are not sure about the adequate setting. The Smart Capture mode includes features like scene and face detection, optimized auto ISO, and a broader dynamic range. The camera automatically chooses the best setting and you don’t need to worry about the settings anymore.
The Z1085 belongs to Kodak’s Z series which includes cameras capable of optical zoom that goes up to 24x. But the 5x optical zoom capable Z1085 IS doesn’t qualify as a megazoom camera. But it is far better with its 5x optical zoom as compared to other cameras in its class which offer 3x optical zoom. The camera also sports a 2.5-inch LCD screen which is adequate for playback and viewing the images.
The camera also offers pretty decent performance. The Z1085 captures the first shot in 2.9 seconds from switched off position. Its shutter lag is 0.4 second in bright light and 0.7 second in dim light which is pretty decent. It takes 2.6 to capture two consecutive shots without flash and 3.2 seconds with flash.
The overall quality of the captured images is pretty good whether the images are takes in bright light or dim light. The images show minimum distortion or noise up to ISO 200. But the images start showing the blur and grains beyond the ISO 200. Though the camera sensitivity can go up to ISO 3200 at full resolution and up to ISO 8000 at a 3-megapixel resolution, the images are totally useless.
The Z1085 IS has a built-in camcorder can record MPEG-4 videos at 30 frames per second with a resolution of 1,280×720 pixels. The overall video quality is better than what you expect from a point-and-shoot camera.
