Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Laptop Review

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 is the latest in the line from the popular X range of business notebooks from Lenovo. It is a very powerful laptop with a great design and outstanding features not to forget its ultra-portable nature.

Design And Display

The X1 is very different from the rest of the ThinkPad range but also essentially the same on some ways. It is certainly the slimmest in the whole series but not as much as the freakish MacBook Air. It doesn’t look like a black box, instead has long tapered edges. The whole chassis has a matte finish giving it a very soft feel.

It measures only 0.84 inches at its thickest best but is quite heavy at around 3.7 kg. The keys on the new island style keyboard are nicely backlit and feel great to type on. Another strange feature is the opening angle of the lid which stands out at 180 degrees flat!

The screen has a strong gorilla glass cover making it quite indestructible and matte finish to minimize glare. The 13.3 inch HD LED backlit widescreen display has a resolution of 1366 by 768 pixels which could have been better at 1440 by 900 pixels. Glare might still trouble you owing to the gorilla glass cover.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Laptop Specifications

The Lenovo X1 is powered by the latest 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 2520M processor coupled with 4 GB DDR3 RAM. There is also a 7200 rpm 320 GB hard drive to store all your favourite stuff. You may also get some other configuration for different prices. For graphics you get the Intel HD 3000 graphics processor which would allow only the modest of games to run at a decent rate. In performance tests, you wouldn’t find it tough breezing past any competitors with its good amount of power.

There are also all the connectivity options and ports including embedded 3G, WiMAX, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB 3.0, eSATA/USB 2.0 ports, HDMI and MiniDisplay port. VGA port is conspicuous by its absence.

The 720p webcam is a worthy addition to the X1’s features list. The Dolby speakers in the laptop provide ample sound keep you well satisfied and quality is also good. The Windows 7 professional comes installed and it loves working on this machine meant to churn out power.

Battery

With all its performance capabilities, the X1 does fall short in the battery department. With moderate usage you can expect only about 3 hours which is much shorter than the MacBook Air. You would need the additional battery to reach more than 5 hours. However their RapidCharge technology does bulk up your battery from nil in a very short time.

Verdict

The ThinkPad X1 has all the features of a high end laptop and provides performance certainly capable to surprising you. It is very thin and with great ergonomics and a sturdy design. For business community it is a much better option than carrying your 18 inch laptop every day. The X1 is well priced at around $1400 and $150 extra for the extra battery. However it is every bit worth the price and one of the most powerful ultra-portables you will come across.
