Mac gains the market share at expense of Windows

In the past few months, Windows has lost its market share to Apple’s Mac OS X. The loss has very large in the past two months as it has lost almost one percentage point worth market share to Mac for the second time.

The Net Applications Inc, a Web vendor, has been tracking the use of Mac OS X for quite some time. It has reported that the gain made by Mac in the past tow months has increased its market share up to 10%.

The Net Applications Inc. monitors the users who browse the various websites. It reported that 88.7% people uses the machines based on Windows OS. This indicated a decrease of 0.94 percentage points since November. Moreover, this is the largest loss for the Microsoft Windows in the last four years. However, in the month of November, the Windows saw a decline of 0.84 percentage points which reduced its market share below the 90% for the first time.

The Microsoft’s market share declined by 1.8% points in the November and December which is the largest ever decline in two consecutive months. The previous largest decline was 0.92 percentage points, which was during December 2007 and January 2008.

The overall loss during 2008 for Microsoft Windows is 3.1 percentage points which is equivalent to 3.4% loss in the market share. On the other hand, the Apple’s market share is continuously growing at Windows expense. In the past two months, Mac OS X has shown a record gain, of which is gained 0.76% points during December. At the end of December, the Apple Mac’s market share was 9.6%. This was the first time Mac showed the market share of more than 9%.

When the Microsoft posted the largest two month drop, the Mac posted the biggest gain in two consecutive months. This gain of 1.4 percentage points is much greater than the earlier record of 0.9 percentage points which was attained in September and October 2006.
