The TomTom’s low-end portable navigation devices started offering the features that were the main attraction of mid-range and high-end devices. Now, its turn of Magellan, whose $300 Roadmate 1470 offers number of premium features that nobody could have imaged on a entry-level model.
Measuring 3.3 inches high, 5.2 inches wide, 0.7 inch deep, The Magellan Roadmate 1470 weighs just 6 ounces. The device boasts of a large 4.7-inch display, which has native resolution of 480×272 pixels. The screen is larger than the one you find on most entry-level GPS devices. As a result, the 1470 displays larger text and graphics as compared to a 4.3-inch screen device.
The device comes with preloaded maps for the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. It also boasts of a comprehensive database of POIs, which includes six million entries across the three countries. The device is also preloaded with the Maps and POI database for Mexico but you will have to pay additional sum of $50 to get the unlock code for that. Though the 1470 supports three languages- English, French and Spanish but you don’t have any option to choose the voice. The device lacks the live traffic is available via Garmin nuvi 265. So, you will have to spend $79.99 to avail of this feature.
The basic features offered by the RoadMate 1470 include Highway Lane Assist, AAA TourBook that features AAA-approved points-of-interests. Another welcomes addition is the inclusion of “Where Am I” feature, which gives your exact location in case of an emergency.
The 1470 borrows some features from the Maestro GPS devices such as inclusion of multiple destinations on a particular route. You can also plan your route according to shortest distance, fastest time, mostly freeways, and least use of freeways.
The 1470 is equipped with the most flexible POI search capabilities. You have option to search the POIs up to 29 categories, or by typing the name or from the included AAA TourBook. You can also have option to search the POIs near your current location as well as along the route or you destination.
