McAfee is an established firm that offers you an instant and complete security for your computer. In September it announced its latest security package, Total Protection 2009. The company offers you the best collection of tools available to protect your computer against threats. Although the McAfee claims better protection of your computer against malware with less impact on systems performance, the suite is quite similar to its previous edition.

You can buy the suite for $79.99 to install it on three computers. Once installed it allows the remote monitoring, configuration of other PCs, simple file and printer sharing tasks and alerts about any intruders on your network.

The user interface is similar to previous year’s edition and a green tick assures you that everything is OK. If any problem is detected, you can set the things right by clicking the Fix button. Manual update and scan can be accessed through two controls provided in the interface. But rest of the common security features are listed in the Basic menu view and more technical features are accessible through the advanced menu.

McAfee’s Backup and Restore software feature allows you to store copies of data on the local and network drives. You can remove the junk from your computer and system registry with its QuickClean feature. It provides you a shortcut for Windows Defragmenter.

Although the software interface is fairly simple and easy to use but the additional lists and menus makes it a bit confuse to control the software. Total protection is equipped with lot of utilities but in some cases switching between them takes a long time as components take time to load. There are more than 10 processes that run with this software. It uses a large part of your memory and has significant impact on performance of the system. It takes quite a while to start up after system reboot.

Total Protection 2009 suffers a few problems that are highlighted above and there are other suites that do not have these problems. Moreover there are other suites that offer you the similar utilities and at a price lower than McAfee Total Protection 2009.
