Measuring 3.85 x 2.10 x 0.96 inches and weighing almost 5 ounces, the Motorola Tundra is a bulky handheld as compared to other flip phones. The phone is available for $199 with service from AT&T and $399 if you pay the full price. The device feels solid and sturdy in hand and offers military specifications certifications for rain, shock, vibration, etc. Like most Nextel devices, the Tundra also has an external antenna, though it is not extendable.
The front panel sports 1-inch external display which shows information like battery life, date, time, signal strength and incoming caller ID. It also acts as viewfinder for camera which is located just above it. A dedicated speakerphone button and a button for adjusting the ringer setting are located next to antenna. The left edge of the phone houses a volume rocker as well as a PTT button on the left spine whereas the camera shutter control is on the right edge of the phone. The bottom of the phones houses a mini-USB slot which can be used for connecting to PC or charging.
When you flip open the phone, you will see a 2.2-inch display which offers resolution of 320×240 pixels and has support for 262,000 colors. The keypad and navigation array are located below the display and provide excellent performance. The keys are spacious and pretty comfortable to use. The navigation array includes a circular toggle surrounding the central OK button along with two soft keys, Talk and End/Power buttons, Back Button, Web browser control, and a shortcut to AT&T’s Cellular Video service. The toggle can be programmed to acts as shortcut for four applications.
The phone offers all the basic features like text messaging, MMS, vibrate mode, calendar, download and file managers, voice recorder, an alarm clock, a world clock, a calculator, notepad, and a task list. The advanced features offered by Tundra includes stereo Bluetooth, voice dialing, PC syncing, A-GPS, USB mass storage, IM, support for AT&T’s PTT network, and Web-based POP3 e-mail.
The Tundra supports AT&T’s 3G network which offers AT&T’s wireless broadband multimedia services like Cellular Video, Mobile Music. The Tundra’s music application has supports for MP3, AAC, eAAC+, and WMA file formats. In addition music player, it also supports XM Radio Mobile, music videos, a Music ID application, and a Billboard Mobile channel.
Tundra also sports a 2-megapixel camera which can capture images in four resolutions- from 1600×1200 down to 320×240, and in three quality settings and four lighting conditions. It also offers some advanced features like night mode, 4x optical zoom, six shutter sounds, an adjustable exposure, and a multishot option. The built in camcorder is capable of recording video clips in two resolutions- 176×144 and 128×96 and three quality settings.
