Contrary to the laptops like Alienware M17 and the Toshiba Qosmio X305-Q725, which provides outrageous designs and big and amazing features and components such as high-resolution screens, twin graphics cards and quad-core processors, the MSI GT627-218US takes little quiet approach. The MSI focuses on two most important areas that matter: a powerful 3D gaming card and affordability.
Looking at the overall design, you will notice that the GT627 is just slightly revamped version of MSI GX720. The MSI GT627 is designed with brushed metallic casing, which is resistant to scratches, and the darker colors can easily hide the scuff marks. The screen bezel is provided with red accents and they represent flames.
Weighing just 6.1 pounds, the GT627 is considerably lighter than most gaming laptops and you can easily carry it around with you, which is not possible with other gaming laptops. Unlike other gaming laptops, the GT627 has 15.4-inch widescreen. Most of the gaming laptops have significantly larger 17-inch screens. Another limitation of the laptop is the low resolution of 1280×800 pixels, which is the lowest resolution that you will get on a 15-inch display. So, you will not get the same amount of detail that you will get on 1920×1200-pixel displays. The keyboard is quite disappointing as it shakes heavily when you type on it.
Apart from these limitations, you will not have to compromise with anything. The laptop provides some nice extras which you will find on high-end gaming laptops. These include HDMI-out port, an ATSC TV tuner, and an eSATA port. You also get 320GB hard drive, which is standard and is enough for storing latest games and photos and videos. One model of the laptop also comes with Blu-ray drive. Other features that you will get include a dual-layer DVD burner; three USB ports, one FireWire 400, media-card reader and the 2-megapixel webcam.
The GT627 is powered by 2.24-GHz Intel Core 2 P8400 processor which is main reason for the low price of the laptop. Though the P8400 does not gives you the same computational power that you get from X305-Q725’s quad-core processor or P-171XL-FX’s Extreme processor, but MSI compensates by paying attention to the most important part: graphics. The MSI boasts of Nvidia GeForce 9800M GS discrete graphics card.
