Nikon Coolpix L24 Review

By on March 30, 2011

Coolpix L24 is the latest addition to the lifestyle series or L series of Nikon. Just like other Nikon Coolpix cameras, L24 too is compact and has all the features of an easy to use digital point and shoot camera. The camera is loaded with some more advanced features than those found in the previous L series digital point and shoots from Nikon.

To start with, Nikon Coolpix L24 is a 14 megapixel camera offering nice details of a shot. In fact, the megapixel count of L24 is much higher than other low range Nikon Coolpix cameras. For instance, the L21 has 8 MP, while L22 has 12 MP only. The camera has a CCD sensor measuring 6.18x 4.55 mm. The aspect ratios of the camera are 4:3 and 16:9.

The target of the Nikon Coolpix L24 is the beginners. Consequently, the camera is loaded with features that will make photography easier for the newbie. The electronic vibration reduction or VR technology is just one example of that. It will really help the beginners to protect their images getting blurry because of the camera shakes. The contrast detection auto focus really works well offering fast and effective focusing options.

In terms of performance, Nikon L24 seems to be quite a good one, especially in relation to other Nikon Coolpix cameras. First of all, the camera comes with 3.6x optical zoom. It also provides 4x digital zoom. You can focus on 5cm in macro mode.

Nikon L24 has an ISO sensitivity ranging from 80 to 1600 which is identical with L21 and L22. The shutter speed of the camera ranges from 1/4000 sec. to 4 sec. It has a built-in flash with a range of 7 meters. The aperture range is f 3.1 to f 6.7. The camera comes with a 10 seconds self timer option making it a nice camera for family photos.

There are several shooting modes and scene modes to choose from. You can also choose from continuous shots, single and Best Shot Selector. Using the capture mode, you can even capture 16 frames in a single burst. You can also capture video at 30fps with the resolution of 640×480. It supports the AVI format for movies and JPEG format for pictures.

Nikon Coolpix L24 comes with a 3 inches TFT LCD screen that has a resolution of 230,000 dot pixel. The internal memory of the camera is only 17 MB. However, one can expand the memory using the SD, SDHC, or SDXC memory cards.

The camera supports the AA size alkaline batteries along with the lithium or EN-MH2 batteries. Like other Nikon Coolpix cameras, this one too seem to be quite energy efficient. The alkaline battery can take up to 220 shots. The lithium batteries can be used for as many as 700 shots.

Look is always an issue with the Nikon Coolpix cameras. With the dimension of 98x61x28 mm, the camera looks quite compact. It only weighs 182g. It is available in three colors – silver, red and black.
