Nikon unveils Nikon D5000, its second HD video capable SLR

nikon-d5000Nikon has come up with yet another product announcement. It has announced the Nikon D5000 SLR camera. This camera is the company’s second D-SLR that boasts of the capability of capturing high-definition video. In must be noted that Nikon had already rolled out the Nikon D90, priced at $999, and with high-definition video recording capability. The D90 has the capability of recording video at 1280-by-720 at 24 progressive frames per second (fps). The new Nikon D5000 camera will be kind of cheaper than its expensive predecessor D90. It will also be capable of recording 720p at 24 frames per second (fps). Nikon has kept the price of D5000 around $730 (body only).

Like its predecessor D90, the D5000 will capture 12.3-megapixel images. It will however employ a smaller image sensor that will in turn be cased in a smaller body. The D5000 will feature 720p video and an HDMI-Out port. Interestingly, Nikon has announced that the D5000 will offer a few features that have not been provided on the D90. One of those features include a 2.7-inch LCD screen that is located on an arm and can be tilted or rotated according to your needs. Other new features on this camera include image image effects. The D5000 boasts of a variety of in-camera effects such as “Color Outline Effect”, “Monochrome”, and “Soft Filter”. It is interesting to note that Nikon’s rival Olympus has also unveiled SLR cameras that feature onboard image effects in its Olympus E-450 and E-30 models. The effects on the Olympus cameras are “Pin Hole”, “Soft Focus”, and “Pop Art”.

Nikon has announced that the Nikon D5000 will be available for purchase in the last week of April. If you want to buy the Nikon D5000 inclusive of an AF-S NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR lens, then be prepared to shell out $850. The body only price of the camera is around $730. This model will give direct competition to the HD video-capable EOS Rebel T1i from Canon that is priced at $899 with a lens.
