The long-awaited Nokia N900 has finally started shipping. Equipped with the Linux-based Maemo 5 Operating system, the handset promises an inexperienced fast browsing like no other handset. It is yet another handheld which has paid much attention to people who like to stay connected with friends through social networking.
The handset comes with a slide-out full QWERTY keyboard which makes typing quite an easy job, ultimately resulting in easy access to friends and colleagues. In addition to the English QWERTY layout, the handset will also be available in variants like Italian, French, German, Russian and Nordic. The OS comes with word-prediction software which enables auto-capitalization, word-completion, and auto-spacing between words that can be configured to the user preferences. It also has a 3.5” touch-enabled screen along with the latter one. The handset’s browser is built by Mozilla ensuring a good mobile internet experience with many functions which are available on PCs.
The handset has an extensive 1GB of total application memory and is powered by ARM Cortex-A8 Processor (600 MHz), 32 GB of on-board data storage (expandable to 48 GB via microSD) and an integrated web browser. The device allows personalization of the panoramic desktops with widgets, contacts and shortcuts. Organized SMS and instant messages can switch between the multiple conversation windows. The 32 GB storage can allow storage of approximately 7000 songs or 40 hours of DVD quality video.
The handset has a variety of games, utilities, themes, panoramic wallpapers, and service plug-ins installed for photo-sharing and messaging through the Ovi Store and Maemo Select. It has an in-built 5.0 mega pixel Carl Zeiss digital camera with dual LED flash, 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratio options, 3x digital zoom along with video-recording capabilities, which can also be used for making video calls over IP using Google Talk. It has integrated as well as assisted GPS navigation, Bluetooth v2.1, cell-based receivers and automatic geotagging. The handheld has a very good resolution of 800x480 pixels which is capable of displaying about 16 million colors.
The Nokia N900 has a stereo microphone and stereo speakers located on each side of the device. PAL and NTSC TV out are possible on all versions of the device using a Nokia Video Connectivity Cable. It can synchronize with Microsoft outlook through ActiveSync.
The N900 is said to deliver a talk time of 9 hours with GSM and 5 hours with 3G. The handset comes packed along with documentation, battery, travel adaptor, stereo headset, video out cable and a cleaning cloth. It has been priced at 500 Euros.
