Pantech C630 reviews – sub-$40 3G phone


Pantech C630 is a phone that combines a simple design with advanced features. The candy bar phone offers advanced features like 3G, GPS and lots of multimedia features that belie its simple exterior. The best thing about Pantech C630 is that it is available for $39 with two-year service agreement.

The C630 has standard candy bar shape and measures 4.1×1.7×0.46 inches. The overall design of C630 is simple with round corners and soft back cover. The left spine features volume rocker and charger jack whereas the microSD card and camera key are located on the right spine.

The C630 sports a 1.76-inch screen which has a native resolution of 176×220 pixels. Though the display is small, the images look sharp and vibrant with vivid colors.  You have the option to adjust menu type, font style, color themes, display brightness and backlighting timer. The navigation array below the screen features two soft keys along with four way joystick, Clear key, Talk and End/Power keys. The Joystick can be pressed down to act as confirmation key and is used as shortcut to new message, IM application, contacts list and My Stuff menu, when the phone is in standby mode. If you press the joystick in stand by mode, it will activate the Web browser.

The C630 offers basic feature set which includes features like 1000-entry phone book, speakerphone, vibrate mode, text messaging and MMS, voice memo recorder, calendar, alarm clock, world clock, unit converter and stopwatch. The advanced features include wireless Web browser, mobile e-mail- Yahoo! Mail, AOL, AIM, Windows Live Hotmail, AT&T Yahoo, BellSouth, Comcast, Earthlink, Juno, Mindspring, and NetZero, IM which includes AIM, Windows Live, Yahoo! Messenger, and the stereo Bluetooth and A-GPS support.

The most attractive feature is that C630 support AT&T’s 3G network and can access whole host of AT&T’s 3G services which include AT&T’s Cellular Video, AT&T Music Mobile, MusicID and XM Radio. It also supports AT&T’s video calling service, AT&T Video Share. The built-in music player supports MP3, MIDI, iMelody, MMF, WAV, SMAF, and AAC+ file formats. The music application also allows you to create and edit playlist, and it also features six preset equalizer settings.

The 1.3-megapixel camera on the back of the device can take pictures in four different resolutions -1280×960, 1024×768, 640×480, and 320×240 pixels. The other camera features include four color effects, three quality settings and four white balance settings, self timer, shutter sound toggle and timer sound toggle. It also has a built-in camcorder that can shoot video in two resolutions -128×96 and 176×144. The Pantech C630 has a rated battery life of 5 hours of talk time and 16 days standby time.
