Well, this Christmas may bring you what you’ve always wanted – a faster phone. We are not talking about Santa’s bag of gifts, but Qualcomm’s new faster and quicker processor.

If Qualcomm Snapdragon 1GHz took you over with its fast performance, then get ready to experience a faster processor – Qualcomm Snapdragon 1.5GHz. Qualcomm will make available the dual-core ARM QSD8672 in the fourth quarter of this year.

This giant step by Qualcomm not only suggests the rising demand for a faster processor that is attuned with tablets apart from smart phones, but also depicts our growing reliance on these devices. So, ARM QSD8672 will provide an all-in-one solution to them.

An ARM design, the ARM QSD8672 is made with the help of 45nm process technology. Also known as dual-core 8×72, the ARM QSD8672 utilizes two Scorpion cores so as to attain a clock speed of 1.5GHz.

The ARM QSD8672 will feature individual voltage scaling that enables both the cores to run at speeds different from each other. There will be voltage difference between the two cores.

The difference in voltage and speed results in low consumption of power & better or enhanced battery life.  This is done by operation of a single core of the processor when the device runs or performs a light task. At this moment, the other core runs in idle mode and consumes lower voltage. This process boosts battery life and adds to the performance of the device.

It has been stated that this new chip will be compatible with low-cost laptops and tablets, apart from smartphones. Some such smartphones include HTC EVO 4G and Nexus One The 1.5GHz processor will allow playback of 1080p videos in almost all the devices and will also support HDMI interface and DDR2 as well as DDR3 memory.

Thanks to the dual-core architecture, the processor helps the phone to play 1080p videos. The phone can also be connected to entertainment systems via HDMI so that users derive maximum out of its multimedia features.

Though no date for the arrival of ARM QSD8672-enabled devices has been set so far, the festival season, this year, seems to be the most probable.
