The Samsung BD-P1600, priced at $250, comes across as a very decent looking Blu-ray player. It is a feature packed combination and aims to live up to its promise of delivering excellent performance at an excellent price. It boasts of features like BD-Live, Pandora, and Netflix streaming. With the help of this player, you can get all this streamed to your TV and home-theater sound system. Interestingly, these features were initially offered only in high-end Samsung models. With this model, Samsung has packed these features in a low cost Blu-ray device.
The BD-P1600, unlike its big brother Samsung BD-P2500, does not feature the Silicon Optix Reon chip in its video chipset. It features a very different chip set. The player is capable of sending extremely good images to your HDTV. The images sent by the player ooze of excellent colors, vivid detail, and natural color reproduction. The player is not very good with standard definition DVDs. It up-converts them to about 1080p. After this up-conversion, you will find the images to be a lot softer and less detailed than the natural ones. The BD Live-capable Samsung BD-P1600 player also features an Ethernet port. You can readily use this port to gain access to Pandora’s and Netflix’s music and videos. If you have an excellent internet connection, then the Netflix streaming through this player will be definitely superb.
Through the BD-P1600, you can hear personalized Pandora.com music channels on your television or on your home theater system. The BD-P1600 features a USB 2.0 port that you can readily use with a 1GB flash drive for all your BD-Live work. You can also use this port in order to play your MP3 music and to display your JPEG images. The USB port of this player lacks video support. The player is capable of supporting on-board audio decoding of Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HS Master Audio Essential, and Dolby Digital Plus. The player boasts of a decent looking, full-screen setup menu. The player also features a dedicated programmable remote with well placed buttons. This player is one of the fastest Blu-ray players around as it takes mere 42 seconds to load and play a disc. Overall, the Samsung BD-P1600 is a very decent Blu-ray player that offers excellent performance at extremely high speeds.
