Samsung Galaxy Y Pro Review

shweta October 10, 2011 Cell Phones No Comments

Like its brother the Samsung Galaxy Y, Galaxy Y Pro is also aimed at youth albeit in a more professional manner perhaps with a QWERTY keypad. Let’s find out whether it can strike a chord with its users.

Design And Display

The slightly different QWERTY candybar design is nothing too flashy. The keys are slightly different with generous amount of spacing between them and slightly rounded on the top. Instead of capacitive buttons it is provided with 4 physical keys and an optical trackpad. The QWERTY keypad is comfortable and the navigation buttons responsive. Overall the phone has a squarish wide shape rounded at the edges. It has a thickness of 11.3 mm and weighs around 109 grams.

The Galaxy Y Pro has a 2.6 inch TFT capacitive touch screen with an average screen resolution of 320 by 240 pixels. It has a accelerometer sensor for UI auto-rotate support. The touch screen is very responsive and a delight to work on although you would mostly be using the physical keys.

Specifications

The Galaxy Y Pro is powered by a 832 MHz processor which would provide just about ample power for a mid range phone. The processor is enough to run the latest Android gingerbread 2.3 which is installed in the phone smoothly. With a touch of TouchWiz UI the smart phone does manage to deliver a good performance.

The gingerbread makes browsing very easy and there is no lag during multi tasking. Samsung’s social hub tool is also a great way to stay updated with everything in your social circle. You can access twitter, facebook and other social networking websites directly with great ease.

The Smartphone supports both 2G and 3G ( HSDPA) networks. For other connectivity options there is Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, microUSB v2.0 port, A-GPS, GPRS and EDGE. There is also fm radio with RDS. Browsing on the small screen may prove to be a difficult task using touch. There is also a microSD card slot which can support up to 32 GB of memory. The battery is a standard Li-ion 1200mAh.

Camera

The Galaxy Y Pro is equipped with a 3.2-megapixel sharpshooter with a resolution of 2048 by 1536 pixels and features like Geo tagging and face detection. This is better than the 2 MP camera adorning the Galaxy Y. The pictures are sharp and clear with many editing options available too. The video recording is at a maximum resolution of 320 by 240 pixels. There is no secondary camera in the front to support the video calling feature.

Early Verdict

Samsung has aimed to land this smartphone right in the middle of the entry level qwerty segment war. With it pricing slated to be lower than $180, this can well turn out to be a winner. Moreover Android 2.3 at this price is definitely a big plus point. The physical QWERTY keypad is also comfortable to use and although the screen is a bit small for someone with large fingers, it can be neglected for such a price. It is slated to release in the upcoming weeks after being announced in August this year.
