Samsung Galaxy Y Smartphone Review

For many Samsung Galaxy fans who couldn’t afford the hugely popular Smartphone line, company has introduced the Galaxy Y. Designed much like its other Galaxy counterparts; it is aimed at the younger crowd and that is what its “Y” stands for.

Samsung Galaxy Y Smartphone Features

Design And Display

It looks all black from the front in contrast to the silvery back side. It is much similar to the Galaxy S although nowhere close in terms of build quality. At 104 mm long and weighing 98 gm it is compact enough to fit in your pockets without troubling you.

Making it much more affordable, the Galaxy Y is provided with a 3 inch touch screen with a resolution of 240 by 320 pixels. The LCD may lack the sheer brilliance of a super AMOLED but still manages to do its job well with a bright and crisp viewing experience.

Specs And Performance

The Galaxy Y is powered by a 832 MHz processor where a 1 GHz chip would have made a lot of difference. There are already many Smart phones at this price range which flaunt a larger engine and it surely counts in the multi tasking department.

The Android 2.3 does go a long way in making your experience smooth and hassle free. Then there are also thousands of applications to choose from the huge android store. Just don’t load too many as it might affect the performance.

The Samsung has also added its TouchWiz interface along with it which does offer some freebies like customization of menus and the Swype feature. It also adds more finishing touches on the social apps and the music player to make everything simpler. It definitely comes in handy.

There are a host of connectivity options like the 7.2 mbps HSDPA, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0, GPRS, EDGE, microUSB port and A-GPS. Only notable absence is that of DLNA. The browser supports Flash Lite 4.0 but not full Adobe flash player.

Camera

The camera is a big disappointment at just 2 megapixels. There is no reasoning as to why Samsung didn’t opt for a 3 mp instead. It has a 1600 by 1200 pixels resolution and no LED flash to offer support. It records videos at a rate of 15 frames per second and other than that there is nothing else noteworthy about the camera.

Verdict

The phone has a standard 1200 mAh lithium ion battery that should provide good enough back up time. It is good low end android phone with many good features but shortcomings too. The build quality could have been better and a better camera would have been much welcome. Also the processor could have encompassed more power to beat the competition.

However the Android 2.3 does offer a smoother experience and vast support base. The handset is slated to release towards the end of this year or early next year. Pricing is slated to be below $200 and for those who cannot afford the Galaxy S 2, it is a good cheaper alternative. Now it is up to the people to decide whether it is a bargain enough to wait that long or just pick some of the existing better products.
