The Samsung SGH-A167 is a basic handset that is available via AT&T’s GoPhone service. The $69.99 handset comes with one of the two plans – prepaid plan or pick your plan. With the pick your plan offer, you can choose a specific amount to be billed each month.
The Samsung SGH-A167 looks like any other basic flip-phone. Sill, the handset looks very attractive in its royal blue color. Measuring 3.54 inches high, 1.83 inches wide and 0.78 inch thick, the handset is very compact and light weight weighing just 3.1 ounces. The handset will easily fit any pocket and you won’t feel the weight. The overall build quality is pretty solid and the handset feels comfortable when you hold it in hand.
As its reviews, the handset sports a rather unimpressive postage-stamp-size external display, which has native resolution of 96×96 pixels. However, it gets the job done and displays all the necessary information like battery life, time, date, caller ID and signal strength. The display neither supports the photo caller ID nor acts as a viewfinder for in the camera mode. The camera lens is located just above the external display. The left spine of the handset houses the volume rocker, while the right spine houses Samsung’s proprietary headset jack/charger port. It is quite disappointing as you cannot use both the peripheral at a time and you will need adapter to use standard headset jack.
The internal display is also unimpressive like the external display, and it has native resolution of just 160×128 pixels and supports 64k color hues. Though the display is on slightly brighter side but the graphics look flushed due to low resolution. However, the display gets the job done if you consider the caliber of the handset. You go to the options to adjust the backlighting time, dialing font size and color, and can choose from list and icon menu styles.
The navigation array is large and spacious but the keys are rather flimsy and won’t withstand pressure. The array consists of four-way toggle surrounding the central OK button, two soft keys, Talk and End/power keys, and a back key. The keypad buttons are also very flimsy but they are large in size.
The main features offered by the handset include a 200-contact phone book, alarm clock, world clock, vibrate mode, text messaging, multimedia messaging, timer, calculator, stopwatch, tip calculator, and a currency and unit converter. You can also access POP3 e-mail accounts via WAP browser and can enjoy the instant messaging.
The VGA camera can capture stills in four resolutions and three quality settings. Other camera option include white balance presets, self-timer, spot metering, various color effects, three shutter sounds and a night mode.
The SGH-A167 has a rated battery life of three hours talk time and 10.5 days standby time.
