The Samsung SGH-A177 is another addition to Samsung’s lineup of messaging phones. The handset is available for $99.99 from AT&T without any contract.
Measuring 4.29 inches high, 2.32 inches wide, 0.47 deep, the Samsung SGH-A177 is a simple handset that doesn’t brags about anything. The build quality is okay and the handset will not withstand the rough handling. The handset sports a 2.2-inch color display, which has native resolution of 220×176 and supports 64k colors.
Though the resolution in on low side as compared to current handsets, the display looks okay considering the caliber of the handset. The screen is bright enough to clearly display the images and graphics. You have option to adjust the dialing font, color, brightness and backlight timer. The menu is available in two styles–list and grid.
The navigation array consists of toggle surrounding the central OK button, the Talk and End/power keys, messaging shortcut, two soft keys, and clear/back button. The navigation array is quite spacious and the keys are raised above the surface that makes them easier to use. The toggle doubles as shortcut for user defined features, while the central OK button launches the Web browser when in handset is in standby mode.
The SGH-A177 attractive keyboard makes it a true messaging phone. The keyboard looks crowded but the keys are sturdy. The keys provide feedback in the form of audible click and you can type the messages quickly.
Other real state includes plenty of dedicated controls, which include keypad lock key, symbols keys, shift key, return controls, dedicated camera key, shortcuts for instant messenger, and shortcuts for games and applications menu.
The left spine houses the volume rocker, while the right spine houses the proprietary charger port/headset jack. It is quite disappointing that you cannot use both peripherals at one time. Moreover, you will have to use adapter if you want to use the standard headset jack.
The main features of the handset include a Instant Messenger, Bluetooth, 500-contact phone book, text messaging, MMS, world clock, alarm clock, vibrate mode, stopwatch, tip calculator, calendar, notepad, calculator, currency and unit converter, timer, and voice recorder.
The handset sports a VGA camera, which can capture stills in three resolutions 220×165, 320×240, and 640×480. The main camera features include four white balance presets, self-timer, night mode, four color effects, metering exposure, and adjustable brightness. There is no built-in camcorder and the handset has only 14MB of internal memory.
The SGH-A177 has a rated battery life of 5 hours talk time and 10.5 days standby time.
