Samsung SGH-A777 Review

In the past two years, Samsung has launched a number of 3G slider phones and SGH-A777 is latest in the list. The phone looks good with fairly common design and midrange feature set. The device comes at price of $79.99 with a service contract and a mail-in rebate.

The Samsung SGH A-777 has a thin profile, measuring 4×1.9×0.5 inches and weighs 3.4 ounces. It comes in red and blue colors. Its 2-inch display supports 220×176 pixels. The display is small but the colors are bright and images, graphics have a sharp look. You can also adjust the brightness, font size, color and backlighting time. The menus can be displayed either in grid or list style. Just below the screen lie a central OK button and two soft keys. The keypad can be accessed by sliding the phone, the keypad buttons are adequately spaced but they are somewhat slick. A microSD card slot, music player key, a control to open pop-up shortcut on home screen are on the right side of the device. On the left lies a volume rocker and headset jack/ charger port.

The device has all the basic features like MMS, speakerphone, voice recorder, converter, timer etc. The advanced features include Yellow Pages mobile app, IM, USB mass storage, PC syncing for images and music, and POP3 e-mail. The device supports AT&T’s Cellular video service, AT&T Mobile music. The music player supports formats like MP3, AAC, eAAC+ and WMA. It also supports XM Radio Mobile, a Music ID application, a Billboard Mobile channel and allows accessing fan sites.

The 1.3-megapixel camera gives above average images with resolution of 1280×960, 640×480 and 320×240. The photos look bright and well focused. The camcorder records videos at 176×144 resolution.

The call quality of the device is pretty decent without static interference. On the other hand, the volume is low which makes it pretty hard to talk in noisy areas. The speakerphone call give you the similar experience with very low volume and you need to keep the phone close so that callers on other end can listen to you. The Bluetooth call experience is satisfactory.

The Samsung SGH A-777 has rated the battery life of 4.5 hours of talking time and 12.5 days of standby.
