Measuring 4.13 inches by 1.76 inches by 0.56 inch and weighing (2.74 ounces, the Samsung SGH-T119 is a relatively lightweight and compact handset. With the SGH-T119 design, the Samsung takes you to the early days of cell phone design when the handsets used to feature rectangular design with sharp corners instead of featuring slider mechanism with a razor-thin profile.
The Samsung SGH-T119 features 1.6 inches display with native resolution of 128×128 pixels and supports just 65,000 colors. The display won’t show sharp graphics or photos but it is the best it can offer considering the overall capabilities of the handset. The users have option to adjust the backlighting duration, the contrast and the font size, color, and style. The handset uses the icon-based menu interface which is pretty simple and intuitive.
The navigation array located below the screen is very spacious and tactile. The navigation array includes a square, four-way toggle with a central OK button along with two soft keys, and the talk and End/power buttons. The toggle can also be programmed to work as a shortcut to four user-defined functions. However, the handset lacks the clear/back control and dedicated speakerphone button. The keypad controls are spacious and large with adequate space between them. However, the keypad buttons are a little stiff.
The left spine of the handset houses a combination charger port/headset jack, which means you can only use the Samsung’s proprietary jack. Moreover, you can either use a charger or headset at one time. The handset also lacks a spine-mounted volume rocker, which means you will have to remove the phone from your face every time in order to change the volume.
The SGH-T119 is a basic phone which is meant for texting and calling. Its features include a 300-contact phone book, which can accommodate four phone numbers, an e-mail address, and notes for each entry. You can also create caller groups which can be paired with one of 15 polyphonic ringtones. Thought the handset supports photo caller ID but it lacks a camera. You will have to find other ways to get the photos. The other essential features include vibrate mode, text messaging, MMS, an alarm clock, a calendar, a task list, a calculator, a world clock, a currency and unit converter, a timer, as stopwatch, and a tip calculator. The speakerphone also supports T-Mobile’s contact syncing, and a voice memo recorder.
The SGH-T119 can be personalized with wall papers and various themes. However, there is one thing worth mentioning that the SGH-T119 is only dual-band (GSM 850/1900) which means that the handset will work only in North America.
The SGH-T119 has a rated battery life of 7 hours talk time and 16.6 days standby time.
