These days, there is very little to choose among economically priced MP3 players. The entire MP3 market is full of low-priced players and the question arises as to what does one want in an economical MP3 player and how is one under-$50 player different from the other? Samsung has launched its $39.99, 2GB U5 MP3 player to give direct competition to the likes of Creative ZEN Stone and the Sansa Clip.
The Samsung U5 has a variety of features like a built-in USB connector, a black and white screen, and above all, a sleek, slender and weightless design. The 2GB device works best with you at the gym or while you jog in your park. You get to choose among black, red, white, pink, or blue colored models of the player. The player weighs a mere 0.81 ounces and measures about 0.9 by 3.5 by 0.5 inches. It sports an OLED screen of the size 1 inch. The lack of color in the display screen may seem to be a downside for many users.
You will find typical MP3 player controls on the device. For volume, navigation, and playback controls, the player has dedicated controls. You will also find mic button, menu button and Record/Shift button on the device. The ear buds that are supplied with the U5 are sort of below average in nature. You will note that the U5 lacks the capability to play video or display any kind of images.
As far as its audio codec pack is concerned, it supports MP3, OGG, and WMA file formats. The best part about this player is the presence of the built-in USB connector on it. Just plug the player into your machine and you will be ready to play music by dragging files directly to the player via Windows Media Player.
The U5 is pretty good in performance, except for the cheap looking and poor sounding ear buds of the package. As far as sound customization is concerned, you get the options of adjusting EQ, Bass, and 3D effects on the player. The player boasts of a dedicated FM radio that is easy enough to operate. The battery life of the player is pretty impressive with 20 hours of continuous music on one round of a full charge. Overall, the Samsung U5 is a decent 2GB player that suits the pocket both in budget and fit.
