Seagate and AMD announces 6GB/Sec Serial ATA Hard Drives

seagate The world of advance computing is constantly in search of faster speeds. In today’s world of flash based memories, traditional hard disk drives are equally familiar and are still rolling in the market. Seagate and AMD have joined hands to give the old Serial ATA HDD’s a new platform with the introduction of their next-generation high speed data transfer 6 Gigabit/second hard drives. These new hard drives are surely to give a speed leap to those so called bandwidth-hungry desktop and laptop PC applications such as gaming, streaming video and graphics multimedia.

As tis reviews, the new hard disk drives offer a speed up to 6 Gigabit per second for all PC applications with a backward compatibility of SATA 3GB/second and SATA 1.5GB/second interfaces. The cables and connectors used in these hard drives are same as that of previous SATA generations. The hard drives are featured with enhanced power efficiency and improved Native Command Queuing. This increases the overall system performance and data transfer speed of the PC applications. The actual features and advantages can be seen in heavy workload applications such as scientific modeling, forecasting, engineering design and simulation. This new interface offers almost twice the performance as compared with the highest performance SATA drives of today.

The newly introduced drives from Seagate and AMD features two Seagate SATA disk drives, one of which is a Barracuda 7200.12 3GB/second hard drive available in 500GB, 750GB and 1TB capacities. The other one being Barracuda 6GB/second drive. There is still no news regarding the actual pricing of the any of these Seagate and AMD joint venture hard drives. The SATA 6GB/second or SATA Revision 3 is expected to be available in the first half of this year. As has been said by Seagate, the first 6GB drives would be available commercially later this year. In order to upgrade to SATA 6.0GB/second, the drives just require a motherboard with a chipset that supports the faster specification and hard drives supporting the specifications.
