The Sony Alpha DSLR-A230 is nothing but a decent upgrade of its predecessor the Sony Alpha DSLR-A200. As far as features on the upgrade are concerned, they are pretty same as those on the earlier model. The change comes in the form of a redesigned body, improved camera performance, and improved image quality. For an entry level dSLR, these new improvements are just enough to carry a model forward.
In terms of price, this camera does not belong to the category of expensive cameras. The body only price of this camera is $549. In case you want to have a 55-200mm lens, prepare yourself to shell out $749.
As far as dimensions are concerned, the camera measures about 5.0 inches by 3.8 inches by 2.7 inches. The weight of the camera is about 18.3 ounces. The camera features a CCD sensor with a 10.2 megapixel resolution. The camera lacks any kind of video recording, lacks the Live View feature, but offers a magnification factor of 1.5x at the same time. The camera offers a LCD screen that lacks tilting ability. The ISO range of the camera lies between ISO 100 and ISO 3,200. The camera features SD and Memory Stick Pro Duo slots, USB, and mini-HDMI connectors on its body. You can use any Minolta A mount lens with this camera.
The camera is fairly easy to use, considering navigation in it is made easy by the mode dial on the device. The camera features a variety of scene modes and also features full-automatic, semi-manual, and manual exposure modes. As this is an entry level dSLRs, its viewfinder is not that satisfying. The camera features the SteadyShot scale, a typical feature in all of Sony’s dSLRs. This scale warns you about shaking while you click your images. The camera boasts of a start up time of a mere 0.4 second.
The camera takes only 0.3 second to shoot under normal lighting. The LCD screen of this camera is slightly difficult to view under direct sunlight. The image stabilization offered by the camera is also very decent. The camera accounts for excellent images when talking about cameras of the same feature set. The white noise in the images is minimal. As far as quality of images is concerned, the colors in them appear bright, vibrant, and sharp. Overall, the Sony Alpha DSLR-A230 is a good entry level dSLR and is can prove to be a smart choice.
