The NV-U84 is one of the best GPS devices in the Sony’s NAV-U lineup. Its 4.8-inch touch-screen is an improvement over previous version but it lacks Bluetooth and traffic data which is a big disadvantage of the device. The device measures 5.2×3.1×0.8 inches sports a Memory Stick Duo slot, a headphone jack, USB port for charging through an adapter.
The Super Suction Cup allows you to attach the device to dashboard or the windshield of your vehicle and the adhesion is enough to stop the device from falling. The graphics are crisp and user interface is uncluttered due to its large display. The viewing in daylight is easy due to its bright backlight. The dual view gives detailed information of an upcoming turn, and the map is displayed in 3D while driving on the highways.
The NV-U84 uses a feature named Position Plus that enhances the accuracy of GPS using the accelerometers and a barometer. This allows device to keep the track of your location even if the satellite signal is lost.
The device features a virtual QWERTY keyboard with large in adequately spaced buttons. The database of the device features brand icons for well-known brands like Shell gas stations or Quiznos Sub shops. If the screen becomes cluttered with too many icons then you can turn off them in the menu.
The text-to-speech function reads the street names clear and loud allowing you to keep eyes on the road while looking for a turn. If you miss a turn, the device gives you an alternate route, but it takes sometime to realize that the turn has been missed.
The NV-U84 is priced at $349 but by paying the same amount of money, you can get the Garmin Nuvi 265WT, which offers you free lifetime traffic and hands-free Bluetooth. So, the only reason to buy NV-U84 is its slightly larger screen.
