Recently, the TomTom has launched a number of entry level portable GPS systems, which offer impressive feature set wih affordable price. The $199.95, TomTom One 140-S is another entry-level portable GPS system in its lineup. The device offers great features such as multi-destination trip, lane assistance, and advanced routing technology. The feature set offered by One 140-S is better than the feature set offered by the $249.99 Garmin nuvi 265T, which is the best entry level GPS device at the moment. But the One 140-S doesn’t provide live traffic but you will have to spend additional money to get the live traffic updates. The 140-S offers the same feature set that you will find on the $179.95 One 140, with the inclusion of text-to-speech conversion.
Measuring 3 inches high, 3.6 inches wide, 0.8 inch deep, the device weighs 6.8 ounces. The handset is designed with stylish black casing, which will definitely entice you. The device sports a 3.5-inch touch screen and comes with a mounting bracket, which can be detached from the device.
The GPS device comes with maps of United States, Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico. The device is provided with a comprehensive collection of POIs, which include seven million POI database featuring important places in all the four countries.
Though the 140-S offers much better features than the Garmin nuvi 265T but it lacks live traffic. You will have to pay additional $60 to get the receiver for live traffic. The receiver comes with 1-year of free subscription and you will have to pay $60 after one year for live traffic. This sounds expensive considering the fact that the Garmin nuvi 265T offers you free lifetime live traffic updates.
The Advanced Lane Guidance offered by the 140-S is found on mid- and high-end GPS device but it is not found on entry level device. The Lane Guidance gives you detailed map of an upcoming turn or exit along with the road signs. Another feature that you will find on mid-level device is the multisegment routing. However, the device does not provide 3D map view but it only gives the footprint of a building.
