Toshiba, a leading manufacturer in the field of technology has announced that its TV based on the Cell processor is on schedule and will be launched this autumn. This means that in about six months of time from now, we all will witness Toshiba’s Cell TV. The company made this announcement in the current week. Interestingly, the Cell is the processor that is widely used in Sony’s PlayStation 3 games console. This processor was developed by Toshiba with help from biggies like Sony and IBM. The special part about this processor is that each of its chips comprises a single Power PC core and eight co-processors. This mechanism ensures processing of heavy-duty videos as a cakewalk. Toshiba’s Cell TV will be the first television of such type in the consumer electronics market.
The company made this announcement while it was announcing latest new models of LCD TVs for Japan. Toshiba confirmed that the Cell TV will join the family of TVs in its product line that will pass in Japan this autumn. Toshiba kept away from divulging any details about the Cell TV but the internet is full of speculations regarding the much awaited device. People are trying to find clues about the clues related to the Cell TV from prototype demonstrations made by Toshiba at consumer electronics trade shows in the past one and half years. A section of people is thinking that inclusion of this chip will mean running of PlayStation 3 games on the TV. This fact is incorrect because Toshiba has already announced many times that their Cell TV will be incapable of running PlayStation 3 games.
Toshiba displayed the image processing power of the chip through real time up-scaling of standard-definition video to something closer to high-definition quality but not exactly to it. This up-scaled picture will not be of exact high-definition quality but will be a lot better than the standard unprocessed picture of a normal TV. The set will comprise a built-in hard-disk drive and will account for an interactive menu, with respect to stored shows, that is currently found in DVDs of TV shows.
