Viewsonic is better known for their LCD TVs, computer electronics and projectors. Their line of laptops however do not impress at all. Their first netbook to hit the market was the VNB102 ViewBook, its very uncanny to see a strategy to build old fashioned netbooks and yet try and sell them for a mere US$399. The VNB102 ViewBook is not one of the fastest and neither is it the lightest netbooks available today. So you may ask a question “what are they thinking”?
The ViewBook is a 10 inch netbook housing an Intel Atom N270 processor. A mere 1 GB RAM is integrated and it’s doubtful if the loaded Windows 7 OS will work appropriately. Space wise the 160 GB hard disk running at 5400 rpm is not very exhilarating. It’s hard to comprehend why Viewsonic has created and marketed a product which may not sell more than a few pieces. What they should have done is wait for the launch of the Atom N450 processor.
Similar in looks to the ASUS Eee PC 701 the VNB102 reminds us about what netbooks were back then. The design is not very authentic and resembles the combination of a Lenovo S10 and the first Dells. The small keyboard with keypads which are misplaced and massacred are not the eye candy we are looking for. However the only good thing about the interior is the two mouse buttons which can come in handy.
Functionality may not be one of the best features of the VNB102. With three USB ports, a headphone and a microphone port, a VGA and Ethernet port it’s just not enough. At the same time an integrated 3 in 1 card reader simply does not suffice, since the new netbooks have 5 in 1 card readers. Testing many types of software on to it did not bring out fruitful results at all.
The 6 cell battery lasts for a mere 4.5 hours which is below average compared to the other netbooks in its range. Lastly priced at US$ 399 it may be one of the cheapest netbooks available, but it’s not! The Asus Eee PC1005PE comes for US$379 and offers a longer battery life, better looks and more functionality. So where exactly does the VNB102 hold its advantage? Maybe the user reviews would reveal its positive attributes.
