ViewSonic VPC08

A few pictures of stylish looking ViewSonic VPC08 were spotted in the wild suggesting that we may have another Windows XP mobile phone up for grabs soon. The ViewSonic VPC08 looked pretty good from its first pictures with a sophisticated metallic keypad and a pretty decent screen to start with. It is not really clear how detailed pictures of ViewSonic VPC08 came out without any background reference. Maybe it’s the talks about ITG xpPhone that triggered ViewSonic to scatter some good looking pictures of the Xp-based mobile phone in the wild.

The MID also appeared in a video providing detailed report about its specifications and everything else. Many websites showcased the video which was nothing less than a hands-on review with the new ViewSonic VPC08. The mobile phone is powered by Intel Atom Z500 processor. The processor is mostly used in mobile computing thanks to its power saving abilities and great resource management at mobile level platform. The 4.3 inch touchscreen could have been better if it was available in widescreen format increasing its actual width.

Other technical specifications of ViewSonic VPC08 include 512MB RAM and a pretty decent 8GB SSD with Windows XP preloaded on it. While the phone is not yet available in the world, word is that Chinese geeks could get the first pick in April for about $705. This is probably a problem considering that you can buy a proper netbook for that much which will give you better results and well, almost everything. Plus, ViewSonic VPC08 doesn’t even look decent from its exterior. The keypad buttons (used for dialing calls) are really weird and huge space left between the last row of keypad and the physical bottom of the phone makes it even weirder.

Front side screen which is used while calling and other mobile operations is also extremely small and not bright enough to perform well in direct sunlight. Basic phone controls are situated between the 2-inch screen and traditional number pad of the mobile phone. When you compare it with market leading phone such as Nokia N97, you will find that it makes N97 feels like a toy. Slightly oversized ViewSonic VPC08 is expected to be available worldwide at the end of this year.
