Virtualization Clients On Android: Cloud Computing’s Able Foil

By on April 11, 2011

VMware is at it again. Now Android-based tablet PCs will have a new software feature – virtualization. For those of you who do not know about virtualization, here is a quick description of the same.
Virtualization is the rendering of a computing resource virtually. The computing resource can be anything. Some examples are an operating system, a hardware device, or a storage device. Virtualization is the new age solution for cost-effective computing resource utilization. Instead of using a computing resource full-time, an organization can choose to use it on-demand. Such an approach reduces cost through lessening IT infrastructure expenditure.

And what is a client for virtualization? What does it do? A client for virtualization is also called a hypervisor. Also known as a virtual machine monitor, a hypervisor will host numerous computing resources virtually at a single point in time. For example, a group of operating systems called guests will be hosted by a hypervisor client.

A hypervisor performs the duties of monitoring the computing resources. From a User Interface, an operator will be able to view the statistics of the computing resources. Allowing the operator to perform operations, the hypervisor client will have such features to support these actions.

Now such hypervisor systems are suitable for installing on hardware. What about desktops? Here, the types of systems involved are non-hypervisor systems. You can find such non-hypervisor clients in desktops and Smart-phones.

Hypervisors can be native and hosted. Native ones are integrated into the hardware, while the hosted ones are found on desktops. Native clients offer more efficiency in handling input/output requests, and also communicating with internal and external computing resources.

Now lets’ come back to the story. VMware will make a virtualization client software application for Android devices. This means that devices on the Android mobile operating platform can use this client application. Recently the company launched a virtualization client for Apple’s iPad. Since the iPad is based on the Apple’s proprietary operating system, VMware realized that the time was ripe to break into the ever growing Android market.

View Client is the name of iPad’s client virtualization software application. Using this application, users could reach their Windows virtual desktop. A virtual desktop is stored on a server. The user pays for using the virtual desktop on-demand. The user need not have a physical desktop. Instead, using a servers hardware resources, the user can access a personal desktop.

The View Client application allows users to access their virtual desktops. Now that VMware has made such client applications for iOS, it was time it made for Android. VMware knows that making for iOS is different from making for Android. This is because the technologies used in these operating systems are different in many aspects.

Customized for Android’s Honeycomb tablet PCs, this virtualization client will be on the lines of View Client. It remains to be seen how this virtualization client application will be consumed by users. With the onset of cloud computing, the market does look brighter. It’s all about waiting and watching.
